Dyffryn
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dyffryn is an electoral ward of Neath Port Talbot county borough, south Wales. The electoral ward comprises some or all of the following areas: Bryncoch, Cwrt Herbert, Longford, Neath Abbey, Darran Wood, Rhydhir and Stanley Wood. The ward is coterminous with the Dyffryn Clydach community.
The community is only 2.7 square miles in size and is packed with history. The ruins of Neath Abbey monastery is to be found in this area. On the site of the current Tesco store is believed to be an ancient castle dating back to the 11th Century.
The more central and northerly parts of the ward is mostly rural. It consists of picturesque farmland and woodland encircling the western base of Mount Drummau. The river Clydach flows through the area of the ward in a North-South direction, past Neath Abbey. The woodland surrounding the river forms a public park. This woodland area was originally bought by a developer who apparently intended to develop the area as a theme park. The theme park scheme never happened. The developer dug up and sold off all the rich top soil in the area as fertiliser and later abandoned the area.
