[edit] Relativity
Relativity was not "made up in school one day", and in fact is one of the most important scientific advances of the 20th century. I gather that you don't approve of it, but do not disrupt Wikipedia to make a point. --EMS | Talk 14:23, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
- Hey, lighten up. a) it was obviously a joke and b) what's the "disruption" on a Talk page. --Dweller 15:20, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
-
- You need to see user talk:Der alte Hexenmeister. Let's just say that there are plenty of people out there who seriously would agree with your posting, and it is a nuisance when they show up here. As for disruption, I was refering to the implied possibility of your initiating an AfD on the article. However, even this joke is mildly disruptive in that it forces people to respond. --EMS | Talk 17:53, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

- Don't worry about it. It was a relief to realize that you were not even serious. It actually was a bit humorous, and the lack of bile in it marked both you and it as something different from the usual trolling the we occasionally get here. Unfortunately, those of us who watch that page have to take that type of threat seriously. --EMS | Talk 21:37, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Userpage
It is rather good isn't it! But I'm just in the processing of nicking it myself! I came across it on Kittybrewster's userpage, haven't looked to see if he's nicked it. But yes it certainly is a nice userpage. I've been meaning to redesign (or ask someone nicely to redesign) my userpage for a while. But this was the best thing I've seen so far. So feel free to join me in nicking this wonderful design! --Wisden17 21:57, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

It does look suspiciously like and advert. WP:AFD would be the way to go, as a PROD is going to be contested by the author and speedy doesn't apply. You want me to do the listing or will you? Petros471 16:09, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Group of Death or Group of death
Um, I just stumbled across the above 'problem'. Not sure what you want to do about it as you started the first page, presumably not realising the second existed. The second is quite comprehensive and probably should remain as is while the first should become a redirect. I'll leave it to you to decide, just thought you ought to know! Budgiekiller 08:39, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
- Ah nuts. What a waste of time. Good spot though. When I searched for "Group of Death" the software didn't find Group of death!
- Just to make sure I wasn't imagining it, I just did the same for "Group of sleep" and it didn't find Group of Sleep. So now I've created Group of sleep as a redirect.
- To address this issue (!) I completely agree with you. Bah and phooey. --Dweller 08:43, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Critic of Islam
- :-) Your own words betray you. Ayaan Hirsi Ali is indeed a critic but to blanket refer to her as "anti-Islam" is not correct. This is true primarily due to the fact that she's only "Anti-" to certain aspects of Islam... and not generally the entire religion. Netscott 14:55, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- Interesting, thanks. I think you'll have your work cut out though, with a narrow definition of the category. Not everyone here is well-intentioned, or with no desire to score points! --Dweller 14:58, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- You can respond here with no need to crosspost if you'd prefer not to. I know all too well from personal experience that not everyone here is well-intentioned. I'm not sure what you're referring to with the "score points" commentary though. Netscott 15:00, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe you were saying "axe to grind" with the "score points" commentary? Netscott 15:01, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- Not too much to read into it... I just meant that there are undoubtedly (exceedingly sad) people out there who will take great joy in adding names that don't really fit to that Category, just so that they can score points against Islam. (Is "score points" a British idiom?) --Dweller 15:05, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- I suppose your usage of "score points" is British in this case. In the way you've described it it sounds a bit more like "axes to grind"... but I don't see how adding someone like Ayaan Hirsi Ali to such a category is going to "score points against Islam"... if anything in my mind it'd be moreso "score points against Ayaan Hirsi Ali"... or put in the way that seems clearer, "Those with axes to grind against Ayaan Hirsi Ali will add her to the category.". :-) Netscott 15:09, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Adelaide Football Club player lists by year
You are right, it does seem a bit extreme to have lists of players by year for every Australian Football League club. You can put them up for AfD, or have me do it if you wish. It's going to be a big nomination. :) --Kimchi.sg 12:13, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

- Oh dear. I've no idea how to make them all appear on one page, which would be smart. --Dweller 12:35, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
-
- The steps are on the Articles for deletion page, but here's a short summary.
- Suppose you want to nominate 3 pages: SomePage, AnotherPage and YetAnotherPage.
- Paste the {{afd1}} on SomePage, as usual. This will create a link to the AfD at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/SomePage.
- To get AnotherPage and YetAnotherPage to link to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/SomePage, paste the afd1 template on these pages in a different form: {{afd1|SomePage}}.
- Create the AfD page (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/SomePage) as usual, but before you go on to step 3 (listing it in the daily log), edit the AfD page and mention the other articles you want to nominate for deletion also. (Just write something like "I also want to nominate these articles for deletion: AnotherPage and YetAnotherPage.")
- List the AfD page on the daily log using the Afd3 template, as normal.
- Hope the above helps. --Kimchi.sg 13:08, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Dayan and Beth din
Hello.
- Please do not revert my good-faith productive changes without any discussion or explanation.
- What I did was correct: there's no need to disambiguate between the Dayan the judge and Moshe Dayan - because Moshe Dayan is not ambiguous to Dayan, and a "Dayan redirects here" notice at the top of Beth din is plenty sufficient.
I think this is a non-issue, but if you wish to follow with this further, please discuss first, and we can enlist a third opinion if we cannot come to an understanding. Thank you. - CrazyRussian talk/email 14:05, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
- I think you've been too quick off the mark. I have given explanation at the talk page. And it was you that reverted my edit without discussion. You've only come here now because I reverted your revert. --Dweller 14:07, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

The reason for keeping miscapped redirects is that, if I were to be typing in the address bar, and mistakenly type "Gledhill" as "gledhill"...
see? DS 17:19, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- That's an argument for creating redirects for every single article that has more than one word in its name. --Dweller 17:22, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

since i havent got any reply i assume that u havent got what the prob. was. i shall elaborate. open the edit option of the same page in two different windows. now do edits in one of them and save it. close the window. now do some edits in another window (they must be different from the first). now save the second window. then open the original page. u'll see that ur first edits would have been reverted and only ur second edits will be shown on the page. this was what happened at the time when u saved ur edits before me, but we were actually editing the same page. since i saved my page later, ur edits got reverted. i m sorry for ur inconveniences but it wasnt my fault either. atleast reply if u got what the prob. was. waitin for ur reply. nids 06:47, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

- Yes, I could see what you were doing (and I was in the middle of writing you an explanation). The rule is never to use subst: on stub templates. Doing so completely ruins the work done by WP:WSS since it makes resorting articles close to impossible. It also means that a template and its corresponding category can easily be separated which is even worse. I think I have fixed all the affected articles now. WP:WSS will probably have to write this rule somewhere easy to see. Happy editing. Valentinian (talk) 12:16, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pass-Pirates
Thanks for the heads-up re db-advert. Why does the template exist? It should be deleted. I don't agree with your db-empty however; the article doesn't seem to fall foul of those criteria. --Dweller 10:01, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
- I believe the db-advert tag was created by an ambitious user but not debated and accepted into the WP:CSD criteria, so while it was undoubtedly a bold move it was sidestepping procedure somewhat, so got the active portion of it disabled (i.e. adding it doesn't automatically list the article in the speedy deletion category). At the time I added the db-empty tag the article was only one sentence saying it was a forum that gave out passwords for adult sites, so I figured it probably classed as speedy (on reflection, db-group might have fitted better as it didn't "assert the notability"). Frankly I still can't see much hope for the article - it fails WP:WEB pretty hard, having been in existence only for a few months and having no Alexa rank. ~Matticus TC 11:04, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Grace (prayer)
I meant in the context of mealtime prayers, but I could be wrong...Andycjp 31st August 2006
The first paragraph of Grace after meals is traditionally ascribed by Jews to the authorship of Moses. Subsequent paragraphs are also attributed to various prophets who predate Christianity by some millenia. On a more factual, "citational" basis, by the time of the discussions recorded in the Mishna, with which the life of Jesus is roughly contemporaneous, Grace after meals (and indeed, the blessings before meals) is a well-established fact of Jewish life with some antiquity behind it. --Dweller 15:09, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

- I think you need to demonstrate that it's notable. --Dweller 15:14, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks, I couldn´t understand what is a speedy tag or a worked-on article. The article is notable because it is about the most important project to preserve the Transmontan bagpipe in Portugal - which had been almost vanished -, supported by many institutions like the Ministry of Culture. They do make a great effort with many projects, like classes and workshops. They have made valuable researches with old bagpipers which are dying, making these their last register. They promoted the most important bagpipe meeting in Portugal: the National Encounter of Bagpipers (Encontro Nacional de Gaiteiros), gathering even bagpipers from Scotland, Spain and France. It is really not just a self-promotional text, since it is a non-profitable organization; the intention is to show how important is to preserve the Transmontan bagpipe, and which efforts are being made. - Thanks, Dweller. I´m sure enough that the Bagpipe Association of Portugal is much more notable than The Hairy Hands Club, but I´m going to retrieve some informations, like quantity of members (not 1,000,000 I guess, but a relevant quantity) and midia coverage. As I have said, is the most important organization to the preservation of the Transmontan bagpipe, for the extense of its courses, workshops, researches and events promoted. In fact, maybe only by the Gaitafolia, the pipeband of the association, there is enough midia coverage. As soon as possible, maybe two days, I may gather some informations. Cheers. - Hi there, Dweller. I think I was able to gather some informations. The Association gahters actually around 200 effective members, and much more non-members. It has been covered by some important newspapers of Portugal, like Expresso, Público and Diário de Notícias. Their effort has been recognized by the government, receiving a subsidy from the Ministry of Culture to support their projects. The shows of their pipeband, the Gaitafolia, have been covered by some important media whereas it has been, like Spain and France. Their most important event, the Nation Encounter of Bagpipers, has gathered more than 8,000 people along its four years of existence, and has been covered by important media, like the newspapers already cited and TV channels like RTP and SIC. They are indeed the biggest movement to the preservation of the Transmontan bagpipe in Portugal, although they work toghether with other minor organizations. I sincerly think its notable enough to be in Wikipedia, since they have just seven years of existence and still growing. Tonyjeff 20:32, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Fine, then, but as I see it currently, the article is worthless. Expand, or save it for another day. I am a bit of a speedy-deletionist, and as the article is currently written, it's useless. And as it was first posted, it's vanity. Niki Whimbrel 19:43, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

- Actually, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) is the smallest official country on earth, according to the history channel. It is, just like the Vatican, in Rome. Occupying only one building, it is the only nation to have only one street in it's adress. They even showed the licence plate for their cars on TV. In order to become a citizen, you must be born there; there are only about 80 of them. Therefore, as you may expect, going to a place no one has ever heard of gives you bragging rights (especially if it's the tiniest country on the planet). | AndonicO 16:07, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Criticism of MLB on FOX
The fact that the word criticism is in the headline makes the theory that it's completely POV the whole point to begin with. And what kind of argument that Major League Baseball is abrivated in the article should in itself warrant deletion!? I'm sure that there are people who don't know what the NFL, NBA, or NHL stand for, so what point are you making. I'm an American yet, I don't completely understand what something like FIFA (the international soccer organization) stands for off the top of my head. for example If you don't know what the letters stand for, then isn't that one of the reasons for Wikipedia to exist!? TMC1982 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- As far as POV goes, I think you'll find I'm not the only editor with that opinion. With regard to MLB, you must have missed the word "almost". Besides, I reckon you'll struggle to find an article about FIFA that doesn't explain that it's talking about football, which was the (minor) point I was making. --Dweller 20:45, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

Eh... I'd rather see it through to the finish, becuase there are a few keep votes, and (more importantly to me) several people who want it merged. It might be useful somewhere, even if you don't see its usefulness right now. Besides which, I'm in no position to comment on the article's usefulness, as a cricket-ignorant American Imperialist. ;-) Grandmasterka 08:46, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
- OK, fair enough. Thanks for the reply. I'm planning on merging it "by hand", as I have no desire to muck up the Bradman article. You Americans have a lot to learn about Imperialism, that we Brits can teach you. [edit] Football IP vandal
The guidelines at WP:AIV say, in part, not to list someone for blocking if "The vandal has not received the full range of test warnings recently (i.e., within the previous week)." This IP's last test4 was on Oct. 12. Because different people may use the same IP account, the policy is generally not to block unless there is a recent (i.e., same day) test3, 4, or testb. Thanks, NawlinWiki 19:11, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
- Ah. Gotcha. So, ironically, if I'd posted a test4 for Norwich City vandalism before you'd then seen the Colchester vandalism, you might have blocked? (Thanks for explaining btw...) --Dweller 19:15, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

I waited a bit to thank you because I didn't want to add any unneccesary (contribs) fuel to what appeared to be quite a fire. Your suggestion focussed the issue (and I'm not just saying that because I was the previous focus.;)) It was a, shall we say, masterful bit of "interfering mediation" (or whatever you called yourself in the Afd) and I am totally stealing it should I ever find myself on the outside of a similar situation. - You wrote:
- I'm surprised by your cite request. I don't think you'll find a single cricket source published since World War Two that would say anything different.--Dweller 09:05, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the message. To be honest, I've never read a book on cricket. It seems to me that if one is going to make a definitive statement about someone being the best at something, then it should be cited. To the uninitiated, like myself, it seems like it may be PoV to make that claim. If I were to say that Michael Jordan was the best basketball player of all time, I'd get a lot of flack for that. If you could just cite one of those myriad sources, then it will be the published author's point of view and not the editors of Wikipedia. Keep up the great work.--Eva bd 13:13, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- After some brief chat on the talk page there, I came up with the idea of finding a source that said that Bradman is universally acclaimed. The source is now included in the article. Thanks! --Dweller 13:38, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for the information on Bradman. It looks like quite an achievement. I've played cricket only a handful of times (infinitely more than most of my countrymen, though) and can understand the feat that it is to score that many centuries. Just batting against my mates I never got more than 25 runs. One problem that I see with declaring any sportsmen "the greatest" is that it is always going to be comparing apples to oranges. Michael Jordan may be a great basketball player, but if he were playing with Wilt Chamberlin, he may have been seen as average. Though undoubtedly extremely talented, Mr Bradman may have looked a little less great if he were batting against bowlers of a different era. Now...all that being said, I appreciate your quick response to my citation request and will commence shutting my mouth on the issue. Have a great Thanksgiving Day tomorrow :) --Eva bd 14:36, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] RE: Bradman average
Hello! The Bradman text only specifies batsmen whose careers have finished because I changed it! I only changed it because Hussey's achievement made it no longer true! I think having the table of Test averages on the Bradman page is marginally undesirable, but I am quite willing to go along with it if you think it would be better there. I think it only needs to show, at most, the top three: it had grown into a very long list! The article documents Bradman's achievements, not Test records! Posting at ANI was not wrong per se, but the matter probably didn't seem urgent and so was probably ignored by most admins. To complain about personal attacks or incivility, WP:PAIN is probably the best place, but I can't quote a direct violation of policy here. I hope the removal of the lists at the talk page settles the matter, and time is spent mostly improving the article and finding sources, not arguing. Perhaps we (or you) can put in a bit to say that nobody knows why she was called Big Nose. In general, metacomments, where you are talking to other editors about the quality of their posts, should be on their talk pages or on the Ref Desk talk page rather than the project page, where you should be furnishing answers to the original questioner. Please also note that I had spent the past hour on posts defending the original questioner against attacks stating that he/she was likely a troll, and also that I said "The questioner probably should take it to someone qualified to examine and evaluate it, to make sure it is authentic, find out the value for insurance purposes, and make sure it is framed with archival materials, or whether it should be kept out of the light," which is not "focusing only on whether it is genuine" as you stated. - it is put back in, without any attempt at rebutting my logic
- I again remove the statement
- It is added again, without a fact tag, but with the year deleted
- the edit summary for this one is "she said it at least once becuase I was standing there when she did so in 1994"!!!
I'd like to try to falsify information with sources and logic, before I remove it, as you suggest. I have been doing this. I get reverted. Morwen - Talk 12:56, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re: WP:CRIQ
Thanks, Dweller. I was just having difficulty thinking of a question. Stephen Turner (Talk) 13:25, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
Sorry. Please give me a few more hours. It is getting really tough to set decent questions. Tintin (talk) 12:30, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- What is HoF ? I was not very active in the last few days and probably missed it. Tintin (talk) 12:38, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

- I suggested that we put some of the best questions into a Hall of Fame. We needn't be too fussy about criteria/objectivity. So far, no-one's responded, but we have had some real blinders recently. --Dweller 12:41, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] No apologies
I make no apologies for what I said on the humanities reference desk. At times, I may have gone too far elsewhere in wikipedia but not in this instance. When people say stupid things on the reference desk, I have no qualms about pointing this out and am not likely to change any time in the future, especially when it is unlikely the person who asked the question is being sincere. Note that assume good faith doesn't really apply in the reference desk, else we wouldn't be able to suggest that users are asking homework questions (which we do all the time) or otherwise just wasting our time (which we do as well). I rarely frequent the humanities reference desk, mostly science only, so perhaps you don't get as many cranks at humanities but really I don't care. Stupid questions deserve pointed replies. Anyway I've said my piece and don't want to debate this anymore. As such, I'm likely to ignore any further follow ups by you. If you feel my comments so bad that you wish to seek outside assitance, that's up to you. Nil Einne 22:11, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- You might want to take a look at User talk:Edison#Reference desk as well. Although I will probably ignore any comments about the above issue, if you wish to debate the issues I mentioned in my response to Edison, I will read what you have to say Nil Einne 22:53, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- How sad. --Dweller 11:35, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
