Dutta (also spelled Datta and Dutt) is an Indian family name. The name is common among Bengalis, Marathis and Punjabis. It as a corruption of the word Aditya which means sun in Sanskrit.

Bengali Duttas(দত্ত: dôtto) are from the Kayastha clan. Some Duttas may also be Vaid Brahmins of Bengal. In that case, they typically use the compund surname surname Duttagupta or Duttasharma.

Punjabi Dutts(ਦਤਤਾ: dattā) are a clan of the Mohyal Brahmin caste. According to the Gotra system, they are the descendants of Rishi Bharadwaj. Some consider Gaj Bhavan, the grandson of Rishi Bharadwaj to be the real founder of their clan.
