Cradle of Filth's third release and second full-length album, Dusk and Her Embrace differs greatly from the band's previous two releases in terms of sound. The music is faster and more accomplished, and Dani Filth's vocal gymnastics are at their most extreme. The album is loosely inspired by the writing of Sheridan Le Fanu and many of the songs hint at vampirism, although vampires are not mentioned by name. Some versions of the album include three extra tracks: a cover of Slayer's "Hell Awaits", the instrumental "Carmilla's Masque", and a reworking of a V Empire track, "Nocturnal Supremacy '96".
Orchestral sounds (although mostly synthesised) are more fully integrated into the arrangements here than on the previous two releases, although there are fewer purely instrumental tracks than on the previous full album The Principle of Evil Made Flesh. The album climaxes with a guest speech from Venom's Cronos on the final track, "Haunted Shores".
Dusk's is the only album sleeve to depict the band wearing little or no corpse paint.
