Dupleix is a station of the Paris Métro, named after the Place Dupleix. The place (square) commemorates Joseph François Dupleix, marquis of Landrecies (1697) and Paris (1763), an administrator and colonizer of India. He was appointed Governor General of the French East India Company in 1742, and he developed France trading position in India and fought against English influence. In spite of the treaty of Aachen (1748), he established in the south of the Deccan a French protectorate, that the English destroyed after his recall to France in 1754. He had invested all his fortune in India, which was never refunded to him.
