Dunnville, Ontario
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dunnville is a farming community in southern Ontario of approximately 13,000, about 45 minutes from Niagara Falls, Hamilton, Fort Erie and Buffalo, New York. It is located near the end of the Grand River in Haldimand County, Ontario, historically near the Talbot Trail. Home to several banks, bars, a Tim Hortons and some shops.
During WWII, the town was home to a Commonwealth Air Training Plan airbase. After the war, the base was turned into a turkey farm until it was restored to operational status in the mid 1990s. Today, the Dunnville Airport is used for music events, recreational flying and skydiving. The airport is also home to the No. 6 RCAF Dunnville Museum.
Originally built as the entrance to the Welland "feeder" canal, the town once boasted several water-powered mills and a once-bustling canal port; however, the feeder canal closed in the late 1880s and, the last mill was destroyed and replaced with a condominium complex about 10 years ago. There is an impassable dam at Dunnville which regulates the level of the Grand River at Port Maitland which, in the 19th century, also helped regulate the level of the Welland Canal (from 1828 until 1887 when the (3rd)canal began to intake it's water directly from lake Erie).
Only a few miles from Lake Erie, Dunnville has many private vacation properties.
Bick's Pickle Factory, Dunnville's largest factory, provides employment for a small percentage of the town's students. It is also home to Rosa Flora - owned and operated by the Bulk family - which is a large greenhouse which ships to many Ontario and American businesses.
