[edit] History
Formed in 1872 the club are amongst the oldest in Scotland. They were founder members of the Scottish Football Association in 1873 and were one of the biggest clubs in the country around this period. They were joint winners (with Rangers) of the inaugural Scottish Football League in 1891. They were outright winners of the league the following season and in May 1892 inflicted Rangers heaviest ever league defeat when they thrashed the Gers 6-0.
At the period of their formation there were a number of other clubs playing in the town of Dumbarton and surrounding areas, but they have survived as the sole 'senior' club in the area (although the 'junior' sides of Vale of Leven and Clydebank play not too far away).
In May 2000 they left their traditional and infamous home at Boghead Park in the north-east of the town, and after a short spell ground-sharing with Albion Rovers at Coatbridge they moved to their purpose built Strathclyde Homes Stadium on the banks of the river Leven underneath the Dumbarton Rock (commonly referred to as the Rock by supporters). The move coincided with an up-turn in the clubs fortune as they were shortly after promoted from the Third Division to the Second. Crowds have been larger since they moved as well.
Fans of the club may have cause for concern as to the future of the club. It is widely thought that the majority shareholder of Dumbarton also has the controlling interest in East Fife.If this is true he has been breaking football's rules on joint ownership for years.
If the SFA chose to do their job of regulating football, or at least observing its own rules, both clubs might be penalised many points, fined or even suspended from the game and the best efforts of the club will have come to nought when they are left propping up the league or not playing in Cup competitions.
The man who is said to control the clubs is not the real sinner, although his motives must be suspect. (Is he interested in the clubs for their potential for property development?) It is the buffoons running the game that allow him to get away with it that need to be examined.
So I guess we should not expect competitive football at Strathclyde Homes Stadium on the 16th of December!
The club plays in Gold and Black strips (uniforms) and is nicknamed the Sons (as in Sons of the Rock, a term for those born in the town of Dumbarton, the Rock being the extinct volcano the town's castle sits on).
