Duchies of Gwynedd (Fictional)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the fictional universe of the Deryni novels of Katherine Kurtz, the Kingdom of Gwynedd is a feudal monarchy similar to the kingdoms of medieval Europe. Most of Gwynedd is divided up into a collection of duchies, earldoms, and baronies, each of which is ruled by a hereditary noble in exchange for swearing fealty to the Crown. While the nobles enjoy the prestige and income of being the ruling class of Gwyneddan society, they also must pay appropriate taxes for their lands, see to the defense of their borders, and enforce the laws of the kingdom. The feudal structure is hierarchal in nature, with noble also swearing loyalty to their immediate feudal superior.

[edit] Travlum

The Duchy of Travlum (also known as Transflumenia) lies in western Gwynedd, across the Eirian River from the Crown Duchy of Haldane. The Llanarfon River forms the southern border of the duchy, separating it from the United Kingdoms of Howicce and Llannedd, and the Mughdorna Mountains form its western border. The area was conquered by the Byzantyun Empire in the third century, but they lost control of the land less than a century later. It was then ruled by the Counts of Travlum until 948, when Count Richthern II fled to The Connait. Beginning in the eleventh century, several members of the House of Haldane held the title of Duke of Travlum, but the title fell into abeyance in the latter half of the century. The title was revived by King Kelson Haldane in 1128, when he bestowed it upon his cousin, Prince Payne Malcolm Saer Augarin Haldane.
