Dublin West

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dublin West is a constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. The constituency has an electorate of 52,676 and at present is served by 3 Teachtaí Dála (TDs). The method of election is the Single Transferable Vote.

The area of west Dublin in recent years is probably the most redrawn constituency in the Republic of Ireland. The constituency is currently made up of the Castleknock and most of the Mulhuddart electoral areas of Fingal County Council and the Palmerstown part of the Lucan electoral area of South Dublin County Council. Currently the constituency forms a rough rectangular shape encompassing Mulhuddart and Corduff in the top left then east to Blanchardstown and Castleknock, south to Palmerstown and then west to Carpenterstown(AKA THE HOOD), Barberstown, Clonsilla and Ongar.

Recent boundary revisions have proposed that the constituency should be altered further and that the Palmerstown area should join the Dublin Mid West constituency while the Scribblestown and Dunsink areas near Finglas should join Dublin North West. Also it is proposed that the largely rural parts of the Dublin North constituency in the Swords electoral be added to this constituency.

[edit] Implications of the 2006 Census

Due to the 2006 census this constituency now has a population of 92,800, giving an unusually large number of voters per seat. This is thought by some to conflict with Article 16.2.3 of the Constitution of Ireland [1] and may require a quick redrawing of the constituency before the next general election [2]. Another view on the issue is that constitutional guidelines for the number of voters per seat do not apply on a constituency basis but rather only matter on a national basis. The Attorney General is currently investigating the issue of constituency sizes and his report to the government will probably determine if a redrawing of the constitutencies before the next election is required.
