[edit] Techniques

  • Odin Sword: Siegfried blasts energy from his finger, drawing a circle on the ground. It then erupts from the ground into rising bursts of energy, which blast his opponent from below.
  • Dragon Bravest Blizzard: Siegfried's strongest technique. He blasts power from both of his fists, which takes the form of a two-headed dragon. However, much like Rozan Shou Ryu Ha (used by Dragon Shiryu), there is a very short moment where he lowers his guard, making his heart vulnerable.

[edit] The Invincible Warrior

Siegfried was said to be the reincarnation of the legendary hero Siegfried. In Norse Mythology, he was a hero who fought and slew the evil dragon Fafnir. Not only did he win countless treasure horde by the dragon, he also bathed himself in the blood of the beast, making his body invulnerable, giving him the reputation of "the Invincible Warrior." However, a falling leaf landed on the back of his heart during this, leaving one spot of his flesh still vulnerable. Eventually, he fell into a trap set by people jealous of him, and was killed from a spear blow through the back of his heart.

Reborn in the current time, Siegfried had known Hilda, the Guardian Priest of Asgard, long before becoming a God Warrior. Although life was very difficult, Hilda ruled Asgard with much kindness and benevolence, and prayed that war would never come to Asgard. Siegfried secretly loved Hilda in his heart, and vowed to protect her with his life.

When the time for the legendary God Warriors to return has come, Siegfried and his close friend Hagen, were chosen to become God Warriors. However, he noticed that Hilda has changed to become a more aggressive and power-hungry ruler after this. He was also warned by Hilda's sister, Freya, that Hilda has changed her nature recently. Unlike the previous gentle guardian, she was now like a devil who hungered for conquest. Siegfried felt doubtful about Hilda's nature, but he did not question Hilda, and remained blindly loyal to her command.

[edit] The Last Defender of Asgard

After the six other God Warriors were defeated, Siegfried was the final opponent Pegasus Seiya faced in front of the Odin statue. Siegfried stated that he was impressed on Seiya making it this far despite being injured several times on his way here, but his journey ends here. Seiya states that Hilda was under the control of the Nibelung ring, but Siegfried does not believe him, and considers his statement to be absurd. Seiya attacks him with his Pegasus Ryu Sei Ken, but Siegfried managed to repel Seiya's attack as if his body is protected by an invisible shield. He then uses his Odin Sword attack to knock out Seiya.

Phoenix Ikki, Andromeda Shun and Cygnus Hyoga, arriving at the Odin statue, were shocked that Seiya was defeated. Ikki challenges Siegfried to battle, but Siegfried managed to overpower him easily with his speed and strength, similarly defeating him. He then turns to Shun and Hyoga, both were injured from previous battles, and uses his Odin Sword against them, leaving all four Bronze Saints down.

Much to his surprise, Seiya gets back up, and attempts to fight Siegfried again. Siegfried then prepares for his Dragon Bravest Blizzard attack against Seiya, but Ophiuchus Shaina, arriving with Dragon Shiryu at this time, leaps in the way to shield Seiya from this attack. Despite this, both were struck down by Siegfried's technique.

Shiryu, seeing that he is the last Bronze Saint standing, now faces Siegfried in battle. However, all of his attacks, even his Rozan Shouryu Ha, were repelled by the barrier generated by Siegfried's cosmo. Shiryu then realises that the only way to defeat Siegfried was to use his Rozan Kouryu Ha, and managed to grab onto Siegfried. However, the spirit of Shura warns Shiryu, telling him that using this technique would result in both his and Siegfried's death, as well as the destruction of the final Odin Sapphire. Sensing Shiryu's reluctance to use his suicidal attack, Siegfried breaks free, and strikes him his strongest attack: Dragon Bravest Blizzard.

Falling to the ground, Shiryu thinks on how he could possibly defeat Siegfried...suddenly, he remembers a story told to him by Roshi about the double-edged sword. When used correctly, it is possibly the strongest weapon. However, because it is a double-edged sword, it has the power to injure the swordsman using it. Realising that because Siegfried's technique is so powerful, it must have some weakness. Getting back onto his feet, Shiryu states that he would find the weakness of Siegfried's technique. Siegfried uses his technique on Shiryu once more, but this time, Shiryu managed to see through the weakness in his technique: as he focuses all his power, Siegfried lowers the guard over his heart for a split second. Shiryu uses his Rozan Shouryu Ha to strike at Siegfried's weak spot. But Shiryu himself was hit by Siegfried's attack as well.

Shiryu tells Seiya that the technique Siegfried uses is similar to Shiryu's Rozan Shouryu Ha, in that by focusing all power into his attack, he would lower his guard over his only vulnerable spot - his heart. Hence, Dubhe Alpha Siegfried, like the legendary hero, is fated to be beaten by the same weakness. Siegfried is impressed that Shiryu saw through and struck his weak spot, but his heart was protected by his God Robe and was not injured. Shiryu states that his purpose is not to defeat him, but to show Seiya that Siegfried could be defeated by this, and collapses, leaving his hope in Seiya.

Siegfried, telling Seiya who is getting back up, that he only has a very short time (1/100000 of a second) to see when he lowers his guard, and if he fails to do so, he would be struck by Siegfried's technique. Seiya, stating that Shaina and Shiryu have protected him and entrusted hope into him, declares that he would be able to defeat Siegfried. Siegfried releases another Dragon Bravest Blizzard attack, and Seiya managed to see through and use Pegasus Ryu Sei Ken. He was hit by Siegfried's attack and knocked down again, yet he managed to shatter the God Robe over Siegfried's heart. Siegfried acknowledges Seiya's strength, but states that it looks like he would be the winner.

[edit] Realising the True Enemy

Seiya, beaten to an inch of his life, hears the voices of his fellow Bronze Saints as well as Athena herself, all of them channeling their cosmo to him, and he stands up again. Siegfried is shocked by Seiya's faith to defeat him, and begins to believe that they are truly fighting for justice. However, Hilda arrives and orders Siegfried to finish Seiya off. Bound by duty, Siegfried states that this final attack would determine the outcome of this battle. Seiya uses a Pegasus Ryu Sei Ken against Siegfried's Dragon Bravest Blizzard, and managed to knock him to the ground.

However, as Seiya approaches Siegfried, he hears music coming from nearby. A new opponent appears, revealing himself to be Siren Sorrento, one of the Mariner Shogun of Poseidon. He states that Asgard has been under the influence of Poseidon since the Mythological times, and hence Poseidon has the power to order Hilda to declare war on Athena. Realising that Seiya was right and Hilda was truly under the control of the Nibelung Ring and no longer the kind ruler of Asgard, Siegfried gives Seiya his own Odin Sapphire. He turns to Sorrento to attack him, but was subdued by Sorrento's Dead End Symphony. Trying to defend himself against Sorrento's music, Siegfried pierces his own ear drums, but this could not defend himself against Sorrento's music.

Realising that he is soon to die, Siegfried decides to sacrifice himself to take out Sorrento. He leaps to Sorrento, who impales Siegfried with his hand, but Siegfried managed to grab onto Sorrento, and burn up his cosmo, causing the two to fly upward to the skies. Before he dies, Siegfried entrusts his hope to Seiya, and flies towards his guardian star Dubhe Alpha.

However, although Sorrento was thought to be killed, he managed to use his illusion to shock Siegfried, and frees his hand from Siegfried. Using his Dead End Symphony, Sorrento caused Siegfried to loosen his grasp over him, and managed to break free, and escaped from Siegfried. He later returns to Poseidon, where he would eventually face the Bronze Saints in another battle.

[edit] Notes & Trivia

  • Dubhe Alpha Siegfried is considered a non-canon character, as he only appears in the anime-only Asgard saga, which series creator Masami Kurumada had no part of.
  • Siegfried is stated to be the most powerful God Warrior, and he could possibly be as powerful as one of the Gold Saints.
  • The method he used to defend himself against Sorrento's music was the same method used by Taurus Aldebaran in the manga. Neither of them succeeded.
  • It is possible that seeing Shiryu's attempt to use Rozan Kou Ryu Ha to defeat him inspired him to use a similar suicidal attack to defeat Sorrento.
  • In mythology, Siegfried was the owner of Balmung, the legendary sword which Seiya received from Odin.
  • Siegfried's name is based on the German version of Sigurd, used in Nibelungenlied
