Duan Chengshi

Duan Chengshi (Chinese: 段成式; Wade-Giles: Tuan Ch'engshih, d. 863) is known as the author of the earliest known version of Cinderella and a scholar of the Tang Dynasty of China. He was born to a wealthy family in present day Zibo, Shandong. In all probability, it was a folktale told by peasants before it was recorded on paper. Miscellaneous Morsels from Youyang was a collection of stories he had gathered, published approximately 853 when he returned to Chang'an after finished his serving as the Governor of Jizhou, and in it was Yeh-Shen, or the story we know as Cinderella.
