example of a first day of issue postmark. The stamp shown here was released at two separate locations on the same day.
There is a question on whether this image is a copyright violation. I don't know the legality of this kind of stuff. If someone decided that wikipedia cannot use this, then please delete it.
For clarification,
- The image comes from my digital camera, i.e. the photograph itself is not copyrighted (i.e. allowed under GFDL.)
- The image is taken from cancelled stamps, the graphic of the stamps and the postmark may be copyrighted by the US postal service.
- The copyright mark on the image comes of the paper that I was photographing. The full page contains the official stamp descriptions and printer's data which is copyrighted. But those descriptive text were not shown in the photo.
- Since wikipedia is not using the image to enter a stamp design competition, should posting the picture of a stamp considered fair use or copyright violation? Kowloonese 21:53, 17 Nov 2003 (UTC)
The USPS Wikipedia entry links to the Non-Commericial Licensing page, which has a link to the application to use stamp images for non-commercial purposes. While they encourage such use, they do require organizations to fill out the request. I'm not sure who would be responsible for making the request. --192.231.128.68 22:36, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
