[edit] History

Emory University founded Druid Hills High School in the Fishburne Building on the Emory Campus in 1919 as a K-11 school for children of faculty. In 1928, the school moved to its current site at 1798 Haygood Drive, where it was designed and constructed by the architects Crook & Ivey. In 1959, the elementary students were moved to Fernbank Elementary School, and Druid Hills housed grades 8-12. Between 1974 and 1976, the school was remodeled, and in the fall of 1996, Druid Hills merged with Shamrock High School to become a 9-12 high school. In 1997, Druid Hills became the first charter school in DeKalb County. During the 1999-2000 school year, the school was again remodeled with new lighting, tile floors, carpeting, blinds, white boards, and the complete renovation of the Alfred Uhry Theatre and the gymnasium. The Druid Hills charter ended in 2002 and was not renewed. In 2004, Druid Hills applied to participate in the International Baccalaureate programme. The school received acceptance into the program on July 9, 2004 with authorization to begin the program in the fall of 2004.
