[edit] Career
Rodney Kellman was born in St. Michaels Barbados and was 2 years old when his family moved to Montreal Quebec Canada, six years later then relocating to Comedy Laval where as a teen he excelled in both baseball and football. Dru played football for the John Abbott Islanders and the University of Ottawa ‘GeeGees. Also played Semi Pro for the Montreal Condors, Plattsburg North Stars, and Lake City Stars in the Empire Football League where he still holds the EFL record most tackles in one game for a defensive lineman (17 solo tackles, 8 assisted tackles, ½ a sack July 26, 1997)
Dru started his professional wrestling career in February of 1999 as a graduate of the Northern Championship Wrestling’s school. He was trained under the guidance of Marc Pilon.
Debuting in June 12, 1999, against his mentor Marc Pilon, aka Marc the Grizzly for the NCW Quebec Heavyweight Championship. Had a great summer as a rookie but in the fall wrestling was put on hold to go play university football for the Ottawa Gee Gee’s.
2002 he came back to the Montreal wrestling scene, first for Paul Leduc’s Federation Lutte Quebecoise where both Smith Hart from the famous Hart family, and Sunny Warcloud gave Dru an opportunity to fine tune his craft in their territories while always coming back to the FLQ for fine tuning. Always looking for a new challenge it was off to the ultra violent promotion International Wrestling Syndicate which back then it was known as the Internet Wrestling Syndicate. This promotion allowed him a vehicle to reach his full potential as a wrestler. Had what some would say the greatest heavyweight feud in that promotion’s history with the Green Phantom over the IWS version of the World Heavyweight Championship for almost half a year. Upon winning the title March 15, 2003 in his hometown of Quebec he defended the title 5 months before losing the title to Arsenal in a Ladder Match.
In 2003 Dru Onyx continued to wrestle and quickly rose through the ranks of independent grapplers throughout Quebec. Dru by chance ran into Eddie Guerrero at a local Monster Gym in the West Island. Where he asked Eddy on how was the proper protocol to get in contact with promotions oversea. Eddy who was impressed with Dru’s knowledge of his exploits in Japan as the Black Tiger and also his stints with Mexico, patiently explain the inner workings on how to get booked. One month later Dru Onyx was booked on his first tour of the UK with NWA UK Hammerlock.
Shortly after the tour Dru joined Championship Wrestling Association an on January 28, 2004 and was their federation’s first champion holding the title for three months before losing the title to Sunny Warcloud May 29, 2004 in an Indian Strap Match. Dru regained the Quebec title a month later in a 3 way dance with Sunny War Cloud and, Manuel Vegas. Later on when CWA joined partnership with NWA Quebec the CWA title was then recognized as the NWA Quebec Heavyweight Championship. On October 15th 2004 Dru won the NWA British Commonwealth Heavyweight Championship defeating Australia's Will Phoenix in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada.
On his 2nd tour with NWA UK Hammerlock, after making 3 mandatory defenses in England, he lost the British Commonwealth title to 'Fergal Devitt' ('Pegasus 2') October 27 in Cardiff Wales in a hardcore match. Two days later Dru Onyx beat Paul Tracey for the NWA United Kingdom Heavyweight Championship in Maidstone Kent .On October 29 in Ashford Kent England he also won back the NWA British Commonwealth title from Fergal Devitt in a handicap match with Devitt and Tracey working together. Winning that third title making him a triple crown champion, and a champion on three different Continents. (North America, Europe & Africa) However due to the fact the UK Heavyweight Championship had to be defended within the next 30 days Dru was forced to relinquish the title and concentrate on defending the British Commonwealth title for the last two days of his 2 week tour.
Back in Canada Dru defended the Commonwealth title across the country in numerous promotions outside of the NWA. Then he went to NWA territories in Ireland and the United States to successfully defend the title and thus raising the status and importance of that particular title. January 26, 2005 Jake Mathews defeated Dru Onyx for the NWA Quebec Heavyweight title.
October 8, 2005 in Nashville Tennessee at the NWA 57th anniversary show Fergal Devitt once again defeated Dru Onyx for the British Commonwealth title. After the match both participants were invited to the New Japan Inoki Dojo in Santa Monica California to train in the Japanese style of pro wrestling. Dru lived at the dojo for 2 months and was trained by 'Tokimitsu Ishiziwa'.
After back from the dojo Dru took some time off to heal nagging injuries, once recuperated he went back out and captured more NWA gold when on April 22, 2006 Southern Championship Wrestling in Almonte Springs Florida, Dru Onyx defeated Thomas Marr and Chasyn Rance in a 3-WAY to win the NWA North American Heavyweight Championship,
Dru Onyx returned to the IWS June 3, 2005 to team up with his nemesis Green Phantom to battle Pierre Carl Ouellet & Sabu in what was Sabu’s last indie appearance before going to WWE the following Monday. Since then he has defended the North American title in both Canada and the United States (July 7, 2006 TNA House Show in Lowell, Massachusetts. Dru Onyx with CM Vanderpile defeated Aaron Aguilera by disqualification to retain the NWA North American title) and has also defended the title overseas in both Ireland and in the UK.
Dru isthe head instructor for the NWA Torture Chamber wrestling Dojo in Laval, Quebec, Canada where he trained future prospects such as former NWA British Commonwealth Champion Justin White, Stew Korvus and Ocelot Nero.
[edit] Alter-egos
- S.O.A., (Spirit of Allah) is a character which he has wrestled as, fairly continuously throughout his career, switching back and forth between this character and Dru Onyx. S.O.A. is a violent & bloody gimmick. Dru when in the Soa character throws traditional wrestling rules out the window as tries to maim his opponents with illegal objects (knives, forks, small swords). In the United Kingdom, S.O.A. was originally billed as "Son of Abdullah" the son of legendary wrestler Abdullah the Butcher who originated the gimmick. The two are not related in real life, though resemblance at times is uncanny. The S.O.A. gimmick is the gimmick most fans in Ireland and UK know Dru for, however, he has made appearances as S.O.A. in the outskirts of Quebec Canada feuding with Pierre Carl Ouellet.
