In 1885, Charles Sergel, a journalist and a young man with a lifelong interest in theatre, founded The Dramatic Publishing Company in Chicago, Illinois. Before the last turn of the century, he had already published works by Ibsen, Strindberg, Ostrovsky, and Maeterlinck. He quickly followed up with Pinero, Schnitzler, and Maugham. In 1892 he was named Peruvian consul in Chicago.
In the mid-20th century, Roger Lewis Sergel, novelist, astronomer, and lifelong friend of Sherwood Anderson, added works by John Osborne, Jean and Walter Kerr, C.S. Lewis, Sally Benson, Cornelia Otis Skinner, Sherwood Anderson, A.A. Milne, Friedrich Durrenmatt, and Charlotte Chorpenning.
In the mid-'60s, Ruth Fuller Sergel, poet, playwright, Inuit art expert and novelist, published works by J.R.R. Tolkien, Tim Kelly, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Peter Weiss, William Golding, Brian Friel, Harper Lee and Daniel Keyes.
In addition to writing plays, sailing to Tahiti, big game hunting in Africa and South America or climbing Mount Everest, R. Christopher Sergel brought us the work of Timberlake Wertenbaker, S.E. Hinton, E.B. White, Arthur Miller, Roald Dahl, Ray Bradbury, Graham Greene, Scott Joplin, Edward Bond, C.P. Taylor, and other leading playwrights of the 1970s and '80s.
Today, Christopher t. Sergel, classical guitarist and chess master, continues the tradition of publishing exciting new plays. This year you'll find recent work by Richard Dresser, Robert Schenkkan, Jack Heifner, José Rivera, James Still, Rebecca Gilman, Steven Dietz, Y York, Robert Fulghum, Judith Viorst, Julie Jensen and other fine contemporary authors.
