[edit] Settings

In all the games of Dragon Warriors, the settings are in a time similar to the dark ages in the medieval times (magic, knights, and so forth) In the Dragon Warrior monsters universe there are slight differences from the original formula. Instead of free roaming environments they are separated into four kingdoms: The Kingdom of GreatTree, The Kingdom of Deadtree, The Kingdom of BigTrunk and the Kingdom of Greatlog where the player starts off and travel to other worlds through various methods. The third varies from the first two because it keeps the free roaming environment of the original Dragon Quest games, where the player roams around the world and each area holds valuable information or items for the player to obtain.

[edit] Battle system

The battles are presented in first person view. The HP and MP of your monsters are displayed at the top of the screen, while the command menu is at the bottom. The monsters are not animated but the attacks are. After winning a battle, your monsters all gain EXP (Experience Points) that level the monster up after reaching a certain number. The monster will gain stats after levelling up and may also learn skills. Sometimes after beating wild monsters or monsters of masters found in Traveller Gates, they may want to join your party. The chance of this happening can be increased with the use of treats, but it is important to note that some monsters cannot be captured even after being tempted with treats. If you accept the monster, you may decide to send it back to the farm or let it into your party immediately. If all your monsters are defeated in a Traveller's Gate, you lose half of the money you are holding and all your items. You are then sent back to the Kingdom of GreatTree.

[edit] Dragon Warrior Monsters

At the start of the game, Terry is being chased around by his sister, Milayou. He hears a sound from the room beside and checks it out, only to find a strange creature. The creature, Warubou, captures Milayou without revealing his intentions and disappears into a closet drawer. Soon after, another creature, Watabou, appears from the same closet drawer and asks Terry what had happened. Upon realising Warubou has already taken Milayou, it prompts Terry to follow it back so he can find his sister. The two are then teleported to the base of a gigantic tree by the closet drawer. Watabou reveals the tree to be the Kingdom of Great Tree, and brings Terry to the top of it where he meets the king. The king informs Terry that to find his sister, he must compete in the Starry Night tournament, which grants the winner any wish they desire. Terry sets out to compete in the Starry Night tournament, hoping to find his sister. Dragon Warrior Monsters is a prequel to Dragon Quest 6.

[edit] Features

  • Breeding: After beating Class F, you are able to breed your monsters if they are at level 10 or above at the Shrine of Starry Night, which is taken care of by the current Master Monster Tamer Breeding requires one male and one female monster. The result of the breeding will be an egg, containing a level 1 monster which has characteristics of both parents, including skills and stats. The egg can then be left in the monster farm or hatched, which costs a small fee. The monster born will have a plus number next to it, the number generally signifying the greatness of the monster's stats, the higher being the better.
  • Genders: Once the Egg Evaluator is available for use, eggs can have the gender of the monster they're containing checked and changed. Both requires a small fee which is paid to the Egg Evaluator.
  • Monster Farm: A storage place for your monsters, where they can be picked up or dropped off. There is an option to put monsters at the farm to sleep, which allows them to maintain their wilderness level but not grow in level. There can be 19 awake and 19 asleep monsters at any one time.
  • Leveling up: Just like in most RPGs, monsters are able to gain EXP (Experience Points) and level up. Each monsters' requirements for EXP to level up varies. When they level up, they gain stats and sometimes skills.
  • Warp Gates: You move around to other worlds through warp gates which are located underneath the throne room. To access these gates, you need to defeat a class ranking. There are a certain number of areas in a world and at the last one, you need to defeat a boss.
  • Arena Battles : In this game you go through ranks that consists of three different battles who you have to defeat before you can advance to the next ranking. Each rank provides harder challenges: the higher the rank, the harder the monsters. The battles you able to start at are from Rank G and go to Rank D and later in the game you are able to go from Rank C to Rank S. These battles open up gates for the character to explore and are necessary to progress through the story.
  • Tiny Medals:these metals are scattered throughout different worlds and are randomly picked up. In the game, there is a man who collects these metals and will give you certain items for how many you give to him. One such item is an egg of a Darck, which is one of the boss(???) monster.
  • Traveler Battles: While in other worlds, you can encounter other trainers that you can battle with. There are different types that will give or do something for you if you beat them:
    • Priest - Will heal you if you defeat him
    • Bard - Will give you medicine that will raise certain stats
    • Merchant - Will give you assorted items (such as Sirloins)
    • Soldier- Will give you random items
    • Wizard -Will transport you to the last portal in the gate
    • Traveler of Greatlog-will give you two random items, just like the soldier
  • Meat: To catch monsters in the game, you need to use meat items. They do not always guarantee a monster, but the more you use the better your chances are to catch one. Certain meats allow you more of a chance to catch monsters. The meat can also be used to tame monsters that are in the farm if it is necessary. There are four types of meats:
    • BeefJerky -first obtainable meat. A low chance of catching monsters.
    • Porkchop -Raises the chances alittle to catch monsters.
    • Rib - Raises the chances to catch monsters. Sometimes can obtain monsters from travelers.
    • Sirloin -Is the best meat in the game. It has the highest chance of catching monsters in the wild and foreign masters.
    • "BadMeat" -The same as BeefJerkey, except that it poisons.

[edit] Dragon Warrior Monsters II

Cobi and Tara are both in a family of monster breeders who have come to the Kingdom of Greatlog to make a living. Shortly after they arrive, their mother tells them to pick up a package from the Vault. As they are heading towards the Vault, they run into the Prince and his companion Warabou, making trouble for the towns people. Unfortunately, after they get the package, it is taken by the Prince and his cohort. Cobi and Tara follow the both of them to a cave underneath the kingdom, where the two are arguing to whom should get the goods. The two of them try to get the package back but in the process knock a big plug out of a hole. The Prince leaves frantically and Warabou uses himself to plug up the hole. He tells Cobi and Tara that the plug allows for the island of GreatLog to stay afloat and without it, will sink. He tells the two of them to get a monster master and when they cannot find anyone, says that they will have to do it. A quest to save the kingdom has now begun..

[edit] Features

There are some differences in this sequel:

  • More monsters are now available including a new class
  • Two different versions that allow you to play as Tara or Cobi. The only difference between the two versions is the type of monsters that can be obtained. In Cobi's he gets more direct combat monsters while his sister, Tara, can get more supportive and healing type monsters
  • Keys-Instead of a fixed number of worlds, you now have keys to travel there. These keys need to be appraised before they can be used. Some of the keys you obtain take to story specific worlds, others are just to explore. In the optional worlds, you need to fight a certain number of monsters to reach the final boss of the world (they are randomized, so there is no way to know who you will fight). The keys are also randomized so you do not know what you will get before you appraise them. Some of the worlds allow for you to obtain rare monsters or very common monsters depending on the name of the key.
  • Linking to both- You are able to fight against another person via link cable just like in the first game. However, after you get to a certain point, you can fight someone playing the original Dragon Warrior Monsters.
  • Unlike the first game, the worlds are more interactive, such as including towns and caves. There are also storylines in some (that are mandatory) where you have to do certain objectives, as in the original, the areas were just randomized and the bosses do not play a major role.

[edit] Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart

Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart diverts from the series slightly. The game was originally released for the Game Boy Advance. Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart's main character is Keifer, a character from Dragon Quest VII, when he was at age 10. In Caravan Heart, the player get both monsters and human people to join the party, which is much larger than the previous games. Other differences include a supply system that requires your caravan make frequent stops to pick up supplies and the aformentioned combination of both monsters and human team members. One final, very large difference is the removal of the breeding system. Instead, when defeating monsters in Caravan Heart, the player occasionally gain "monster hearts", which also made an appearance in Dragon Quest VII. Using 1 or 2 Monster Hearts, the player can merge a monster into a newer monster form, similar to Shin Megami Tensei's system. This allows three "parents" for young monsters in Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart, and increases exponentially the number of breeding comments. Caravan Heart is the prequel of the PlayStation game, Dragon Quest VII.

The upcoming Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker for the Nintendo DS, recently revealed through the publication, Shonen Jump, is the latest installment in the series. The game seems to be set around a tournament referred to as the Joker GP. The game has also been confirmed to feature Wi-Fi play through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service.

[edit] Monster families

  • Materials - These monsters are all composed of metals or other minerals. They are resistant to Ice and Fire attacks and have a high defense. Examples: Golem and mudoll.
  • Bugs - Insectoid monsters are part of this family. They start with weak stats but grow to have good attack and defense. They usually learn many poison based skills. Examples: Hornbeet and Armorpede.
  • Plant - The monsters in this family include trees, flowers and other plants. Examples: Rosevine and Facetree.
  • Zombies - This family is comprised of undead monsters. Examples: WhiteKing and Hork.
  • Slimes - The monsters in this family are all variations of the Slime monster. Examples: Slime and GranSlime.
  • Birds - This family consists of mostly winged mammals and birds. They are usually the easiest to raise of all the families. Examples: Dracky and RainHawk
  • Dragons - This family consists of lizards and dragons. They are strong in most stats but use more EXP to level up. Examples: Dragon and Divinegon
  • Demons - This family is comprised of mostly humanoid monsters that are generally considered to be evil. Examples: MadKnight and AgDevil.
  • Beasts- This family is made up mostly of mammals and have high HP and Attack. Examples: Antbear and Unicorn.
  • Bosses (???) - These are the most powerful monsters in the game, having very high stats and learning lethal skills. They are also the hardest to obtain. These monsters are sometimes referred to as Demon Lords due to them being bosses or major enemies from other games in the Dragon Quest franchise. Examples: Zoma and DracoLord

[edit] Other information

  • In the first two installments (unknown in the third), the most powerful slashing attack is called GigaSlash. This move is also present in Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King by the Hero of the game after he reaches the highest sword level.
  • There are monsters they allow for the player to obtain a huge amount of experience points. The monsters are slime based and have metal coats that protect them from damage (usually only a point or two worth of damage from an opponent, even with Metal Cut!) and look indentical to their non-metal counterparts. There are only three of them: Metally, Metabble, and Metalking. These also are seen in the main Dragon Quest series, in which their latest English names (as seen in Dragon Quest VIII) are Metal Slime, Liquid Metal Slime (or Metal Babble), and Metal King Slime. These monsters are not hard to defeat, due to their low HP count but they tend to run a lot which makes the job of obtaining the points not an easy venture.
  • In 2002, Enix made a PSOne port of the first two Dragon Quest Monsters games in Japan. The Playstation port of the first two Dragon Quest Monsters games and Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart were only released in Japan.
