Dragon Flyz

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dragon Flyz is a television program created by Gaumont Pictures that ran for approximately two or three years, accompanied by a line of toy action-figures. The program centered on a coalition known as the Dragonators (a combination of "dragon" and "aviators"), who are primarily humans who ride on Dragon-back for the purposes of search-and-rescue.

[edit] Characters

The main characters are Dragonators Z'neth (pronounced zenith), Summit, Peak, and Apex, with their respective Dragon steeds Riptor, Sky Fury, Wingstorm, and Blazewind. These are antagonized by the Dramen, Gargoyle-like creatures who also ride on Dragons. Rulers among the Dramen are the jealous, cowardly, sadistic, and treacherous trio of Dread Wing, Nocturna, and Fryte. Briefly, the series also features Kraiko, an archetypal "noble savage", whose respect for honor and honesty balances his barbarian greed and arrogance. Kraiko is at first Dread Wing's rival, then his ally; but when Dread and Nocturna betray Kraiko, he surrenders to the Dragon Flyz and prevents his tribe from engaging in further battles with them.

Although the four siblings Z'neth, Summit, Peak, and Apex (three brothers and a sister, in that order) are not the only Dragonators, they are by far the most prominent. Among other primary figures are their Dragons, who are given some personality, as opposed to Dread Wing's Blackheart who is merely a bellowing, lava-drinking monster; The elder Aaron, who fits the stereotypic description of a Wizard in that he is old, wise, and bears both a crystal-tipped staff as well as a message of truth and hope; his colleague Joshua, a councillor; and Drahm, who is an orphaned Dramen raised by the Dragonators as one of their own. There is also Orack, a scientist, and Sky Fury's child, whose name is not given.

[edit] Storyline

In the story, the Dragonators are a social security system --- a kind of defensive army ---- for a civilization of people who dwell in a flying city, called Airlandis, which is kept aloft by means of red crystals that apparently possess hidden telekinetic power. The word for the city may be described as a play on "Atlantis" or as a phrase "air land is". In appearance, Airlandis resembles Laputa; however, in addition to its gleaming golden human habitat, Airlandis contains five "biospheres"; artificial biomes created to harbor wild animals. The Airlandis was built for to escape from what is simply referred to as the Cataclysm; presumably a disaster caused by nuclear explosion. Yet all evidence suggests that Airlandis is only a temporary sanctuary, and that the humans and Dragons are together seeking a new place to live. Dread Wing, who desires both to destroy humanity and live in the sky, battles with them at every turn. He is allied with many trollish Dramen, and is in command of a swarm of insectoids called Gremwings.
