Dr. Dahesh (1909 - 1984) was the name-title and pen name of Saleem Moussa Ashi (1909–1984) founder of Daheshism. He was born in Jerusalem on June 1, 1909, and shortly after moved with his parents to Beirut.
He was a Lebanese humanist, author, philosopher, and purported worker of miracles. By the age of 21, he had adopted the name Dahesh (Arabic for "inspiring wonder").
Dr. Dahesh's spiritual message can be summarized in the following five points: 1- The existence and immortality of the spirit. 2- Spiritual Fluids form the texture of the universe, and the substance of its creatures. 3- Spiritual causality and just reward. 4- Reincarnation. 5- The essential unity of all religions.
His publishing career included essays, poetry, short stories, novels, and an autobiography, and exceeded 150 works.[1]
Dahesh was stripped of his nationality and exiled from Lebanon in 1944. In 1953, Lebanon, led by a new president, restored his citizenship. Dahesh began collecting works of art around 1930 and continued to do so for the rest of his life. Today, his art collection belongs to New York City's Dahesh Museum of Art.[2]
He also formed the Daheshist Library, the largest private library in the Arab world, known for its literary, scientific, artistic holdings, and for its periodical collections. He died in 1984, in New York State.
