I live with my wife and our three daughters in the Harambee/Riverwest neighborhood of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I received a B.A. in English and History from Campbell University in 1995 and an M.A. in English literature from North Carolina State University in 1998. I've taught rhetoric and literature at both of these universities, as well as the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Marquette University where I receieved the interminable ABD in (medieval & renaissance) English Literature after quite a few years in the doctoral program. My main academic interests concern political theology, the "history of the book," material culture, and English literary history during the confessionalization of Europe from c. 1381-1666. I hope to revisit former interests in British and American literature since 1660s, particularly Victorian and High Modernist writers, and maybe I will get back to writing poetry and stories as well.
I have been or am currently involved in the online and on-the-ground manifestations of several community projects, including the Riverwest Currents, the Riverwest Neighborhood Association, the Riverwest Food Cooperative, and the Riverwest Investment Cooperative. I have contributed writing to Comment: the journal of the work research foundation, The Matthew’s House Project, The Sixteenth Century Journal: The Journal of Early Modern Studies, Books & Culture, and (of course) Wikipedia. I am co-founder, associate and design editor for The New Pantagruel, a quarterly journal driven by Movable Type and featuring, among other things, Gargantua's Mouth (a group blog) and the regular blog-column of Ambrose Bierce's irascible encyclopaedophile, Fr. Gassalasca Jape, S.J. tNP is owned and operated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization under the auspices of the Pantagruel Press, of which I am also a principal owner.
