Dozo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dozos are traditional hunters in northern Ivory Coast. They are members of a secret society containing only Dozo sons. It is believed that the amulets worn by Dozos possess magical properties protecting them from harm, and amplifying their vision and hearing. Such amulets, as well as specialty hats, are said to make them bulletproof; this has led to their high regard in Africa, and they are frequently hired as soldiers, or to guard abandoned vehicles, direct traffic, or patrol religious sites.
The Dozos obey strict morals compelling them to rebel against injustice and oppression; currently, this has involved taking up arms against the central government in the Ivory Coast, supporting the efforts of the northern rebels.
They are also found in Mali and southern Burkina Faso.
