Doug Moran National Portrait Prize
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, the richest Australian portrait prize, and also the richest portrait prize in the world, with a prize of $100,000 in 2005. It was started by the Moran family. Entries are exhibited at the State Library of NSW. Painters and subjects must be Australian citizens, as specified in the rules. It was begun in 1988 to celebrate Australia's bicentenary.
There was a court case in 2002-2004 involving the Moran family and the Tweed Shire Council, which ended with an out of court settlement. Following this, there was no longer a $1000 prize paid to the 30 finalists who did not win, and no longer an international judge.
