Dorianne Laux

Dorianne Laux, a poet, was born in Augusta, Maine, in 1952.

She worked as a sanatorium cook, a gas station manager, and a maid before receiving a B.A. in English from Mills College in 1988.

Laux is the author of four collections of poetry: Smoke (BOA Editions, 2000), What We Carry (1994), Awake (1990), and from Norton, "Facts About the Moon" (2005). With Kim Addonizio, she is the co-author of The Poet's Companion: A Guide to the Pleasures of Writing Poetry (1997).

Among her awards are a Pushcart Prize, an Editor's Choice III Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. She has twice been chosen for Best American Poetry. Laux is a Professor at the University of Oregon's Program in Creative Writing and is currently the program's director.

She lives in Eugene, Oregon with her husband, poet Joseph Millar, and her daughter Tristem.
