John Gardner's 1971 novel Grendel retells part of the story of Beowulf, presenting many of the characters differently and introducing new ones. While the roles and actions largely remain the same, many characters have radically different personalities and roles. Thses reflect the postmodern presentation of the 8th-10th century Anglo-Saxon epic. The novel takes place as Grendel develops, ending at his death by Beowulf. As a result, Gardner introduces introduces many new characters to explain the situation that call Beowulf to action.
