In HEX (Rykodisk), a collaboration she created with Steve Kilbey of the Australian guitar band The Church (Arista); and as guitarist/singer for Game Theory (Enigma Records), Donnette Thayer has been described as "the enchantress" (Bucketful Of Brains), "a suave (post-paisley) successor to California flower-pop" (Trouser Press Record Guide, 4th edition) and "Gaea personified" (Hard Report), Thayer's imagery-laden lyrics augmented by her intriguing, alluring vocal presence made her one of the most important of the women in original alternative rock in the 1980's and 90's.

As the guitarist/vocalist for Game Theory, with Scott Miller, Gil Ray, Shelley Lafreniere and Gui Gassuan, Thayer toured extensively promoting the cult classic, Lolita Nation (Enigma). Thayer played on the subsequent Game Theory recording, Two Steps From The Middle Ages.

Following the release of Two Steps, Thayer teamed up with Steve Kilbey of The Church, whose top 10 hit single "Under the Milky Way" was #12 for the ear of 1987.

In 1987 Kilbey and Thayer created their self-titled HEX, originally released on First Warning, then Rykodisk (1989), as well as Demon UK. The Kilbey-Thayer duo returned to the studio to produce their second HEX recording, Vast Halos (1990).

In 1997, Thayer released a solo album, Chaos and Wonder, on Escapist Music.
