Donkey Konga is a GameCube rhythm game starring the gorilla Donkey Kong, developed by Namco and published by Nintendo. It is intended to be played with a special controller (DK Bongos) resembling two small bongo drums, although standard GameCube controllers can be used.
Donkey Konga was developed by the same team of people who made the popular PlayStation 2 series Taiko: Drum Master, aka Taiko No Tatsujin. Gameplay and screen layout are very similar, the difference being that the player most frequently beats to Nintendo melodies. A majority of the songs are Nintendo songs from the Super Mario series, the Legend of Zelda series, etc. Some songs are not Nintendo related, and include Louie Louie, We Will Rock You, Shining Star, Rock Lobster, and others.

[edit] Gameplay
The player must hit the drums (either with the left hand, right hand, or with both) and clap (detected by a microphone built into the bongo) in time with the music. Horizontally scrolling symbols show what to do and when. Success builds up the player's life bar and earns coins, which can be used to unlock additional game content. Earning many coins in the game allows more difficult songs to be unlocked, mini-games to be played, or the standard 'bongo' sounds to be replaced by other noises such as tambourine or farmyard animal noises.
In beginner ("Monkey") mode the symbols are widely spaced and follow obvious beats in the music. At harder levels ("Chimp" and "Gorilla") they come more frequently, often in "bunches", and require close listening to the music.
Up to four controllers can be attached for multi-player games, either in competition (two players only) or cooperation.
Japanese, European, and US versions exist with different tracklists. Each has 31-33 songs.

Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are hanging out at the beach one day when they come across some mysterious objects that resemble barrels. Fearing they had something to do with King K. Rool, they take them to Cranky Kong. Cranky explains that they are bongos, so Donkey tries playing them. Diddy tries to do so as well. Then, when Donkey clapped, the bongos started glowing. Cranky explained that the bongos had some kind of power inside them. Donkey and Diddy continue to play the bongos, but they both play terribly. Cranky advises them to practice. At first they are against this, but then they realise if they can become successful in playing the bongos, they would afford as many bananas as they wish, so they start practicing.

Namco created two GameCube follow-ups in Donkey Konga 2 and Donkey Konga 3. Both games are virtually the same as the original, save for new songs, new mini-games, new background environments, and more Donkey Kong characters.
