Donaghmede (Domhnach Mide in Irish) is a suburb in north east Dublin. It is located in the Dublin City Council area close to the border with Fingal County Council about 6 miles north of the city centre. It is close to Kilbarrack, Raheny, Baldoyle and Howth. Donaghmede has its own station, Howth Junction, which is on both the DART line to Howth/Malahide and the Northern Commuter line to Drogheda. The area is served by bus route 29a from the city centre. Previously the Aerdart service operated from Howth Junction to Dublin Airport but this service was suspended in 2005.
The railway line marks the eastern boundary beyond which lies Baldoyle. To the north is the N32 / M50 extension and Clare Hall. A green belt area then stretches towards Portmarnock and Kinsealy although this is slowly being built over with new housing developments at Clongriffin, Stapolin and Balgriffin. The Kilbarrack Road acts as the southern boundary and Ayrfield is located to the west.
Within Donaghmede are a number of housing developments: Donaghmede, Grangemore, The Donahies, Grange Abbey, St Donagh’s, Millbrook, Newgrove Estate and Howth View. The bulk of these developments were constructed between circa 1970 – 1974. Unlike other suburbs in Dublin Donaghmede did not exist as a village prior to being consumed by the suburban sprawl. Rather it consisted of a number of large houses with the attendant worker’s cottages ( most of these survive along the Hole in the Wall Road that leads to Portmarnock). None of the original big houses exist today.
The shopping centre stands on the site of the original Donaghmede House. Dunnes Stores is the anchor tenant. Tesco Ireland opened a hypermarket in nearby Clare Hall in 2004. There are two primary and two secondary schools in the area. Holy Trinity Parish church is located opposite the shopping centre on Grange Road. There are a number of soccer and Gaelic football clubs including Donaghmede Celtic and Trinity Gaels. Trinity Sports and Leisure Complex is situated beside Father Collins Park although this is to be redeveloped under the Clongriffin development.
The postal code for Donaghmede is Dublin 13. It is located in the Dublin North East constituency and is a ward within Dublin City Council area.
