Don Stenberg

Don Stenberg is a Nebraska attorney and politician. He served as Attorney General of Nebraska from 1991 to 2003. He also served as legal counsel to Governor Charles Thone from 1979 to 1983.
In the 1996 U.S. Senate election, he made an unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination. He tried again in the 2000 U.S. Senate election, winning his party's nomination. He lost to former governor and 1996 Democratic nominee Ben Nelson in the general election, 49.01 to 50.99%.
After his Senate loss in 2000, he remained Attorney General until January 2003. He then returned to work in the private sector where he remains of counsel at Erickson and Sederstrom.
[edit] 2006 campaign for the U.S. Senate
In 2005, Stenberg announced that he would once again be a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2006. His Republican primary opponents were former Nebraska GOP chairman David Kramer and former Ameritrade COO Pete Ricketts. Rickets won with 48% of the vote; Stenberg finished second with 36%.
