"Don't You Want Me" was a single released by British synthpop band the Human League from their album Dare (1981). It reached number one in Britain during Christmas time, 1981. In April 1982, it reached the top forty portion of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, eventually spending three weeks at number one, and enjoying one of the longest chartspans of 1982, twenty-one of those spent in the top forty. Billboard magazine ranked it at number six for the year. "Don't You Want Me" is the first song performed entirely on synthesizers to top the U.S. pop chart.
A cover of the song was the last majorly successful single by Liverpool-based pop group The Farm. It was released in late 1991, having been produced by Mark Saunders, who also produced The Cure and Erasure.
The song was also covered by rock band Texas live at Glastonbury in 1999.
Future Bible Heroes covered "Don't You Want Me" for the 2000 album Reproductions, a Human League tribute album.
The song was covered by Marilyn Manson and Shirley Manson in 2004 as part of a much anticipated duet project, but due to both parties disappointment with the session results, remains unfinished and unreleased.
The song is loosely based on the theme of the film(s) A Star Is Born wherein a protege's life and career surpasses the need for the man who discovers her.
[edit] Video
The music video for the song shows what looks to be the shooting and editing of a murder-mystery film, featuring the band members. Due to being a "making of" video, the crew and camera apparatus used within appear throughout.
The video was recorded in 1981, just as the music video culture was becoming a standard in music.
