Dominic Matteo (born April 4, 1974 in Dumfries, Scotland) is a Scottish football player who currently plays for Blackburn Rovers F.C. as a defender.
Matteo won Under-21 caps for England, but later was called up for the Scotland side, the nation of his birth. He won 6 caps for Scotland but was forced to retire from international football due to recurring injury problems.
His first league team was Liverpool F.C., for whom he played between 1992 and 2000, and the skills he possessed during the time at this club attracted attention from Leeds United F.C. boss David O'Leary, whose team he joined in August 2000. He made his debut against A.C. Milan the following month.
He made his Scotland debut against Australia in November 2000, and continued to be one of Leeds' best players through their Champions' League campaign, in which they achieved a semi-final place. He is fondly remembered by Leeds fans especially for the goal he scored in the Champions League campaign at the San Siro against A.C. Milan, with the Leeds fans still occasionally singing "Dom Matteo, He's our captain-o, Scored at the San Siro, Dom Matteo"
When Rio Ferdinand moved to Manchester United F.C. in the summer of 2002, Matteo was handed the full captaincy. When Leeds got relegated, following the retirement of Matteo from international football, Matteo signed a three-year contract in July 2004 for Blackburn Rovers, for whom he made his debut against West Bromwich Albion F.C. in a 1-1 draw.
