The pub has a reputation of serving Bass in good condition, and is listed in the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA)'s Good Beer Guide. Many of the famous (erstwhile) Plymouth artist Beryl Cook's paintings are set in or around the Dolphin. The pub also provided the setting for the BBC's animated comedy series Bosom Pals, which was based around some of the characters in Cook's paintings and featured the vocal talents of Dawn French, Alison Steadman and Timothy Spall.
