"Doin' Time" is a song appearing on the band Sublime's self-titled 3rd album. The lyrics tell of a cheating girlfriend, whose infidelities and poor treatment of her lover makes him feel like he's in prison. "Doin' Time" features heavy looping of bass and drums in the dub style for which Sublime became very well known. It was released as a single on November 25, 1997, which contained alternate versions of the song including one by Wyclef Jean; additional versions appeared on the post-Bradley Nowell compilation album Second-hand Smoke and several bootlegs, including one with Snoop Dogg. The song is also featured on the soundtrack to the PlayStation 2 game Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2.
The song is a loose cover of "Summertime" by George Gershwin, composed for the opera Porgy and Bess; future Long Beach Dub Allstars DJ Marshall Goodman appears on the recording and is mentioned in the lyrics.
[edit] Re-released
The original version of "Doin' Time," which includes Bradley Nowell's original lyrics, was released in 2006 on the Deluxe Edition of the band's self-titled "Sublime" album. The deluxe edition also includes 5 remixes of Doin' Time, and the original music video.
