Dogmeat (Unknown – 2162-04-20) is a recruitable non-player character that appears in Interplay's post-apocalyptic RPG Fallout. He also makes an appearance in Fallout 2 as part of a special encounter.
The name Dogmeat is possibly taken from the movie A Boy and His Dog, a post-apocalyptic tale in which one scene features the main character referring to his dog as Dogmeat.
In original Fallout, the player first encounters Dogmeat in Junktown where his owner, an unnamed man closely resembling the character Mad Max from the movie series of the same name, died at the hands of a local gangster. If the player feeds Dogmeat an Iguana-on-a-stick or wears a leather jacket, Dogmeat will follow and fight along side the player.
In Fallout 2, Dogmeat makes an noncanonical appearance in the the Café of Broken Dreams special encounter.[1] During the encounter, he can be picked up by the player if the player approaches him wearing Vault 13 jumpsuit (no armor) or the Bridgekeeper's Robes (due to a bug in the game). Café of Broken Dreams is a reference to the Boulevard of Broken Dreams painting. The building itself closely resembling the Maltese Falcon business establishment in the Hub of original Fallout.
Canonically, the player adopts Dogmeat on 2161-12-30 in Junktown. Dogmeat died when the player invaded the Mariposa Military Base (a.k.a. the Vats) to destroy Master's mutant army on 2162-04-20.[2][3]
