In dog paddle swimming the swimmer lies on their chest and moves their hands and legs alternately exactly as a dog does when swimming. It is often the first swim stroke done by young children when they are learning to swim.

Another use in this stroke is that it allows a change of in the motion to muscles. If a swimmer has to traverse any considerable distance, he may find that a few occasional minutes employed in swimming like a dog will be very useful in relieving the strain on the muscles of both legs and arms.
