[edit] Overview

[edit] Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

Doctor N. Gin made his debut in Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back as the penultimate boss. From this appearance, N. Gin is seen to be Doctor Neo Cortex's right-hand man (taking over from Doctor Nitrus Brio) and also an expert in mech-building. His distinguishing feature is a large missile that protrudes from his head. Cortex is heard talking to N. Gin before and after Coco reveals Cortex's plot to Crash [1], so assumedly he is still in the space station before Cortex plummets to earth. It is safe to assume that he escaped the space station before Crash and Nitrus Brio bring the station crashing to Earth.

[edit] Crash Bandicoot: Warped

N. Gin appears here once again as the penultimate boss in the game. He has made a few "modifications" to his mechanics[2], and battles Coco and Pura on the Moon, but ends up failing to defeat her. At the very end of the game, Cortex, Uka Uka and Dr. Nefarious Tropy are stuck in the core of the Time Twister. If there was any chance of them escaping the time twister, Dr. N. Gin would've been the only man who could somehow set them free, as he was floating in outer space away from the Time Twister as it went into disarray.

[edit] Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex

Here, N. Gin plays a minor role as an attendee in Uka Uka's "bad guy convention", and is the one to reveal Neo Cortex's super-secret weapon[3]. He also hinders Crash and Coco in several levels alongside the rest of the bad guys (namely Doctor Nefarious Tropy, Tiny Tiger and Dingodile). In this game, he does not have a robotic tone to his voice, one of only two games (the other being Crash Tag Team Racing) to not have it.

[edit] Crash Twinsanity

N. Gin returns as the pilot of Mecha-Bandicoot. When that fails to defeat Crash, the Mecha-Bandicoot plummets into the cavern below. It is unknown how N. Gin got to his battleship from there or how the Mecha-Bandicoot was available in the 10th Dimension. It is also revealed that since Cortex's last defeat, N. Gin has made himself a heavily-loaded battleship, and gathered up a crew of many rhinos and a walrus chef to help him. N.Gin acts as the boss of the "High-Seas Hijinks" level, which only leads to the destruction of his crow's nest. After the sinking of his ship, he joins N. Tropy and N. Brio in the attempted theft of the Evil Twins' riches, only to be disposed of by Spyro the Dragon. In a deleted scene, Cortex (disguised as Coco) follows Crash into N. Gin's battleship and is kidnaped by N. Gin. While in N. Gin's custody, he tells Cortex (who he thinks is Coco) that he is madly in love with her.

[edit] Other appearances

  • N. Gin is a playable character in Crash Team Racing, having a lightish-purple kart and high acceleration.
  • N. Gin is also an obstacle in the Crash Bash level "N. Ballism", who appears in a spinning machine in the center of the arena at random intervals, shooting many extra balls in every direction.
  • N. Gin also appears in Crash Nitro Kart as one of the major characters. During the course of the game, he suggests building a cybernetic shark like Nash, thinking that it would make a great henchmen and would "fit right in", although Cortex is not convinced[4].
  • In Crash Tag Team Racing, Like Crunch Bandicoot his looks and personality have changed greatly. N. Gin's skin has taken on a grayish tone. He also appears to be a very depressed, psychotic, and somewhat feminine individual, at one point asking Crash to buy him a ballerina outfit, so that he can feel pretty[5]. He no longer acts like a proper villain and has lost the robotic tone to his voice.

[edit] The origin of N. Gin's rocket

N. Gin was once a famous physicist in the defense industry, but one of his missile projects went haywire and hit him in the head. Soon after that, he reconstructed the missile as a life-support system, turning him into a cyborg. He was taken in by Cortex as his right-hand man to replace the traitor Doctor Nitrus Brio. When N. Gin is stressed or angry, the rocket becomes active, giving him quite a headache.

Originally, it was implied that N. Gin's rocket only produced fire when he is stressed. However, in recent games he appears to have gained more control over the rocket, using it both to hold projectiles and manually firing it to stabilise his vehicle during a slide turn in Crash Tag Team Racing.

[edit] Weapons

N. Gin's main weapons are his giant mechs that he uses throughout the series.

  • In Crash Bandicoot 2, he pilots a flying, legless mech equipped with lasers on its hands, missile launchers on its shoulders and a large laser cannon on its stomach.
  • In Crash Bandicoot 3, he fights with a modified version of his previous machine. It holds two gatling guns in its hands and has missile launchers on its shoulders and stomach. After its weapons are destroyed, it transforms into a space-ship which has more missile launchers, two laser cannons and a cannon that shoots extremely powerful golden mines.
  • In Crash Twinsanity, he pilots the Mecha-Bandicoot, which has a missile launcher on its left hand and a chainsaw on the right. It also has a plasma cannon for a nose.

[edit] Trivia

  • His name is a play on the word "engine".
  • In Crash Tag Team Racing, he drives three cars, Extreme Surplus, Junkulon Prime, and Doom Buggy.
  • His voice in the later games is noticeably based on Peter Lorre.

[edit] Voice actors

  • In Crash Tag Team Racing, he is voiced by Nolan North.
  • Kazuhiro Nakata voices N. Gin in the Japanese dubs of the games.
