Doc Sadler

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Doc Sadler is the head Men's basketball coach at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He was hired on August 8, 2006 to take over for former coach Barry Collier, who left to become athletic director at Butler University.

Sadler was previously the coach at the University of Texas at El Paso, where he led his team to a 48-18 record and 2 postseason appearances in his 2 seasons at the helm.

At Nebraska, Sadler inherits a team that has been relegated to the middle of the pack in the Big XII conference for several seasons, after former coach Danny Nee led the team to four NCAA appearances and an NIT tournament title in the 1990s. Hope for this season rests on the shoulders of junior Australian center Aleks Maric, who should contend for all-conference honors. A backcourt of senior point guard Charles Richardson and sophomore Jamel White also will be key to the Huskers' success.

Sadler started his first season with the Huskers with a 5-0 start(as of November 30, 2006). In the process of posting this record, he upset in-state rival Creighton 73-61. Creighton was then ranked 20th in the AP poll. Following the Creighton win, Nebraska received a vote in the AP poll, giving them an unofficial ranking of 53rd. Also, the Huskers were ranked first in unofficial RPI estimations. Nebraska fans are claiming the 2006-07 Nebraska team as the "State Champs" in college basketball, with wins over Nebraska-Omaha and Creighton in the regular season and Nebraska-Kearney in an exhibition match.

Sadler has already secured three recruits for the 2007-2008 season during his short tenure as coach - forward Alonzo Edwards from Texas, junior college forward Alex Chapman, and junior college forward and Chinese sensation Shang Ping of Illinois Central College.
