[edit] Music video
Britney made her directorial debut with the music video for "Do Somethin'," though she had assistance from previous Spears collaborator Billie Woodruff ("Born to Make You Happy," "Overprotected"). Britney requested that she be credited as "Mona Lisa" for the video, her apparent alter-ego for when she yells and gets angry.
After an opening scene in which the camera takes the audience through a metal tunnel leading up to a door reading "Mona Lisa," we find Spears and her crew performing a dance routine. Next, the girls make their way into Britney's pink hummer and drive among the clouds in the sky. As it turns out, their location is a club named Hole in the Wall. Once at the club, Spears and friends attempt to liven things up by dancing suggestively, seeing as everyone there besides them are stiffs. Following their dancing, they get up on stage and toy with the guys at the bar. The ending of the video has Spears singing at a microphone with her friends as her band.
In December 2005, this video was declared the worst video of 2005 by MuchMusic's annual Fromage special, making it the third straight Britney Spears video to be given the dubious honor.
[edit] Chart performance
Though "Do Somethin'" was never officially released in the U.S., it still managed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 at number one-hundred through aid of digital downloads. However, for the first time for a Spears single, downloads were weak and the single peaked at only number forty-nine on the Hot Digital Songs chart.
"Do Somethin'" achieved much more success on a worldwide scale, reaching the top ten in several nations. The single was a success in the UK debuting at six and selling 70,000 copies.
