DMX Music

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DMX Music (previously known as Digital Music Express before its merger with AEI Music), is a subscription service that provides over 100 channels of music in digital format, delivered via digital cable, satellite, and on-premise technology. It is available in the U.S., Canada, UK, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Hungary, Poland, South Africa, Hong Kong,Venezuela and Australia and is also offered on some 30 airlines world wide. The service began in 1992 and is delivered primarily via satellite. The only consumer Direct broadcast satellite service in the United States to carry DMX was the short-lived AlphaStar. The service in Europe is branded as DMX Xtramusic, is supplied via Astra 1, and is encrypted using the insecure Cryptoworks format.

DMX Music now faces stiff competition from the next generation of services, such as Sirius and XM, both of which deliver their signals directly through small roof-mounted antennas, rather than through a small dish as DMX, DirecTV or Dish Network require. Other companies provide similar services, such as YCD Multimedia (via hard disk based system) Muzak (via Dish Network, otherwise for businesses only), and Music Choice (via digital cable).
