Derek Steen was born in Sydney, Australia in 1986 at the Royal Northshore Hospital.
Derek has lived in Adelaide and Spain. He's visited Paris, USA (Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara, New York, Washington D.C., Greensboro (NC), Pekin (IL), Denver (CO), San Francisco), New Zealand (Wellingon), Queensland, Mt. Buller, and Thredbo.

He has been acting throughout his life due to his parents careers in the entertainment industry. His father, Erik Steen, is a director/executive producer for DSP Beyond. His mother, Suzie Steen, is an actor, makeup artist, and mostly now runs the talent agency Northshore Actors.

In January 2006, Derek started The Podshow About Nothing - a podcast essentially about nothing.

In May 2006, Derek created PodTea For Cancer with help from listeners and other podcasters such as Adam Curry (host of The Daily Source Code), Schmee from (The NodCast), Cali Lewis from (Geekbrief TV) and listener Michael. PodTea For Cancer raises money for The World's Biggest Morning Tea - A foundation created by The Cancer Council of Australia to raise money for cancer. In 2005, The World's Biggest Morning Tea received the Guiness World Record for being the world's biggest similtanous morning tea. PodTea For Cancer] brings Australia's Biggest Morning Tea to the World! The event has proven quite successful so far!
