DJ Richie Rich (UK)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DJ Richie Rich is a British DJ predominantly known for his hip hop and Acid House music. He shares a name with an American DJ most famous for DJing with 3rd Bass, but they are not the same person (both took their name from the same comic book character).

[edit] Biography

Richie Rich was one of the first British DJs to start recording and releasing electronic music, with "Don't Be Flash" (Spin Offs, 1985). His most famous tracks - "My DJ (Pump It Up Some)" (Gee Street, 1988); "Salsa House" (FFRR, 1989) - are Acid House tunes, but he also worked extensively with hip hop artists: he collaborated with Bello B of Outlaw Posse for a track on the Real Skills EP (Krazy Fly, ????) and made a name for himself remixing songs by the Jungle Brothers, such as "I'll House You" (Gee Street, 1988). Rich became highly in demand as a remixer, and produced tracks for a variety of artists including De La Soul, Eric B and Rakim and Queen Latifah. He also recorded under the names Grandmaster Richie Rich and The Scam.

Along with Jon Baker, Rich was also the founder of the Gee Street Records label, the original home of the Stereo MCs and Outlaw Posse, as well as being the UK home of Gravediggaz, Queen Latifah and the Jungle Brothers. The label was a subsidiary of Island Records, and operated its own subsidiary for dance music, called G-Zone.
