Division of Paterson (1949-84)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Division of Paterson (1949-84) was an Australian Electoral Division in the state of New South Wales. It was located just north of Newcastle, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. It originally included the towns of Singleton, Maitland and Muswellbrook, however redistributions moved the Division north, and by the time it was abolished in 1984, it included the towns of Gunnedah and Mudgee.

The Division was named after Banjo Paterson, the federation-era poet and author. It was created at the redistribution of May 11, 1949, and first contested at the 1949 Federal election. It was abolished at the redistribution of October 11, 1984.

A new Division of Paterson was created at the redistribution of January 31, 1992, and was first contested at the 1993 Federal election. It was located in much the same area as this Division, although it was not directly connected to it.
