The division was created in 1984 to replace the abolished Division of Wilmot and is named for Joseph Lyons, Prime Minister of Australia 1931-39 and MP for Wilmot from 1929-39. It is located in central Tasmania, stretching from the eastern to western coasts and includes such places as New Norfolk, Deloraine and St Marys. It has been a marginal seat, changing hands between the Australian Labor Party and the Liberal Party.
