Divine Mercy Sunday

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Feast of the Divine Mercy or Divine Mercy Sunday falls on the Octave of Easter (the Sunday immediately following Easter), and is dedicated to the devotion to the Divine Mercy promoted by St. Faustyna Kowalska. It was celebrated unofficially in many places for some years before being made a feast of the entire Roman Catholic Church in 2000 by Pope John Paul II.

It is revealed in the diary of St. Faustyna Kowalska that the Lord Jesus Himself assured that whoever will participate in Holy Mass and sacraments of confession and The Holy Eucharist on that day is sure to obtain full remission of sins.

Pope John Paul II instituted the Feast of Divine Mercy as a universal feast in the Catholic Church on April 30, 2000 (Divine Mercy Sunday for 2000), the same day that he also canonized St. Faustina. The first occasion of its celebration universally was in 2001. He also decreed a plenary indulgence associated with this feast day.
