Disodium aurothiomalate is an organogold compound used for its antirheumatic effects to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It is the disodium salt of gold (auro) - thio - succinic acid.

[edit] Mechanism of action

It inhibits lymphocyte proliferation, lysosomal enzyme release, the release of reactive oxygen species from macrophages, and IL-1 production.

Gold salts can decrease the inflammation of the joint lining. This effect can prevent destruction of bone and cartilage. Gold salts are called second-line drugs because they are often considered when the arthritis progresses in spite of antiinflammatory drugs

[edit] Side effects

It can also cause photosensitive rashes, gastrointestinal disturbance, and kidney damage.
