Disequality

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Disequality is a condition in which one quantity can be greater than, or less than, but not equal to another quantity.

[edit] Disequality versus inequality

Disequality differs from inequality, in the sense that inequality denotes two quantities in which there is a known ordinality, i.e. that one is less than another, or one is greater than another, whereas disequality leaves the ordinality unspecified.

Also, some variations of inequality also allow the equals condition (e.g. greater-than versus strictly greater-than).

[edit] Notation for disequality

  • A ≠ B
  • A!=B
  • A.NE.B
  • A.NEQ.B

(as compared with inequalities such as A>B, A<B, A≥B, A≤B).
