The Discovery Times Channel is a digital cable channel that was a joint venture of Discovery Communications and The New York Times. The channel is now solely owned by Discovery Communications. The channel has approximately 39 million subscribers.[1]
[edit] History
Beginning around 1995, the New York Times began a spinoff of sorts to its traditional print format called The New York Times Electronic Media Company. The purpose of this new venture was to develop new products and alternate distribution channels for The New York Times. Over the next several years, the new company's television unit (New York Times Television) began developing several series for predominantly cable networks such as TLC, The Discovery Channel, CNN, and Showtime. Non cable networks also picked up programming such as ABC, and PBS in the United States.
In 1998, Discovery Civilization was rolled out as part of Discovery's digital cable suite (there are other networks in the suite, all of which still exist, and all with the exception of Discovery Kids, have all been renamed.)
In 2002, New York Times Television, and Discovery Communications announced a joint venture to run the channel. Later in that same year, the channel was rebranded as "The Discovery Times Channel".
In April 2006, the New York Times sold its stake in Discovery Times back to Discovery Communications ending its ownership in the channel.[2]
