monkey.org is an Internet collective formed in 1996 by David Langhorst and Dug Song. It provides basic Internet services and support to its small user base.

monkey.org provides shell accounts, personal web space, IMAP and POP email, web hosting, domain registration, consulting services, limited Internet access, and software development support services such as CVS.

[edit] History

Langhorst (username dirt) and Song (username dugsong) brought monkey.org online in Ann Arbor, Michigan while students at the University of Michigan and employed as part time developers at the University's Information Technology Division. Jim Simpson (username jim) joined the support staff in 1998.

For most of its existence, monkey.org has run OpenBSD as its preferred operating system and has supported the OpenBSD project through financial donations and development contributions. Several OpenBSD developers are monkey.org users, most notably Niels Provos, Aaron Campbell, Eric Jackson, Nate Binkert, and Song himself. Dug Song is also the author of several security tools, including DSniff.

monkey.org has been hosted in many locations since its inception. A partial list includes The University of Michigan IFS Project, The Center for Information and Technology Integration (CITI), Anzen Computing, Arbor Networks as well as several private homes. Today, monkey.org is located in the basement of the Michigan Theater owned Cadillac Building in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In 1998 monkey.org started collecting donations from its userbase to cover hardware and Internet access fees. Prior to this, monkey.org was funded primarily by Langhorst and Song. Today monkey.org is completely self-sufficient. In 2003 monkey.org incorporated as a State of Michigan C-corp.

In 2005, Langhorst started a page on Wikipedia about Monkey.org, not realizing that it would count as vanity/spam. It has since been userfied for him.
