[edit] Prior to founding
The first organization of the Romanian Byzantine Catholic Church in the Bihor region after the 1700 Act of Union was under the Latin rite bishop of Oradea Emeric Czaky who organized Romanian Byzantine Catholics in their own archdiaconate under Vasile Paul. The archdiaconate contained 70 parishes.
In 1748 Pope Benedict XIV named Meletie Covaci bishop of Tegea, auxiliary, and vicar of latin rite bishop Paul Forgach for the romanian byzantine rite parishes. This arrangement of pastoral care would prove unsustainable.
