Diocese of Meath
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The (Roman Catholic) Diocese of Meath since 1778 until the late 19th century had its seat in Navan, County Meath, Ireland. Charles Stewart Parnell's affair with Kitty O'Shea led to the Bishop of Meath having a letter read at Mass in the diocese in condemnation of the relationship. As Parnell was quite popular this caused a backlash which eventually lead to the seat and bishop going to Mullingar, County Westmeath permanently. The diocesan School, St. Finians was also moved to Mullingar. The current Bishop is Dr. Michael Smith.
