Diocese of Copenhagen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Diocese of Copenhagen is a Roman Catholic exempt diocese named after its episcopal see, the Danish national capital Copenhagen. It covers all Denmark (as in neighbouring counties where none of the pre-Reformation bishoprics were re-established after Lutheranism became the new official state church in the 16th century) and two Danish overseas possessions, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. It has the distinction of being the largest Catholic diocese by area in the world.
It was established on 1868.08.07 as Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Missions 1869; demoted as Apostolic Prefecture of Denmark, on 1892.03.15 again promoted as Apostolic Vicariate of Denmark. Only on 1953.04.29 it was finally promoted as regular, post-missionary diocese of København
