The Diocese of Chester is a Church of England diocese based in Chester, covering the historic county of Cheshire (and therefore including the Wirral the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport and parts of the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside. The cathedral is Chester Cathedral and the bishop is the Bishop of Chester.
The diocese was created during the Reformation in 1541 from the western part of the Diocese of York, covering Cheshire and Lancashire. A separate Diocese of Manchester was created in 1847, and a Diocese of Liverpool in 1880 - the Diocese of Blackburn was split off from Manchester in 1926.
